The Lodge Saltnerhütte in Tschapit…right on the Alpe di Siusi with a grand vista
of the legendary Mount Sciliar

Discover the largest alpine plateau in Europe from its most beautiful side. Surrounded by lush green and flowery meadows at 1850m above sea level, you will find the Lodge Saltnerhütte Tschapit in the heart of the nature park Sciliar-Catinaccio. The striking Dolomites are right in front of you, not to forget the fantastic view of Mount Sciliar, which is also known as South Tyrol’s local mountain. Our family-friendly lodge is not only a meeting point for hikers and gourmets, but also the ideal destination for children. While your children are having fun on the playground and at the petting zoo, you may sit back and relax on our lawn and enjoy the majestic mountains of the Dolomites.

The Lodge Saltnerhütte is the ideal place to stop for refreshments before you ascend to Mount Sciliar. We are popularly called “the last gas station”. We will pamper you with typical home-style cooking, local snacks, and homemade pastries. We offer you various delicious specialties, such as our famous apple dumplings and our buckwheat specialties. We manage the beautiful alpine hut in the Sciliar area during the summer months (June to October).

We look forward to welcoming you to our alpine lodge!

You may reach the lodge Saltnerhütte……by car

From the parking lot Spitzbühl (P 1), you may walk on the asphalted forest road to the Lodge Saltnerhütte in Tschapit. Those who do not manage the first steep climb may take the lift.

…by cable car Siusi / Alpe di Siusi

You may reach our lodge on a beautiful hiking trail from Compatsch towards the Hotel Panorama. After a short climb, at the crossroads, take the right hiking trail marked No. 10 towards Sciliar. You may reach our alpine lodge in just over an hour. This trail is ideal for families with children and also with strollers.

It is also possible to reach the Lodge Saltnerhütte via the mountain road to the Hotel Panorama. The short meadow path down to the Lodge Laurinhütte with marking 6 leads you to the bridge. Then turn left onto the forest path and arrive at the Lodge Saltnerhütte.

…by foot from Siusi allo Sciliar and from the farm Miesnerhof

For more experienced hikers, we recommend starting the hike from the valley.

From the farm Miesnerhof or from the village Siusi allo Sciliar, walk in the direction of Bad Ratzes. From there, the marking No. 1 will lead you to the Lodge Schlernbödelehütte in about 1.5 hours. Once there, it is an almost flat hike through the forest for about 1 hour to our Lodge Saltnerhütte.

You may also reach us via the first geological trail in the nature park Sciliar-Catinaccio. From Bad Ratzes, the path with the mark No. 1a takes you up to the Prossliner-Schwaige in about 1.5 hours. From there you may already see our lodge, and in approx. 15 minutes, you have reached your destination. This route is shorter but requires a certain fitness level as it is a little steep. However, you will pass a beautiful waterfall. Be surprised …

The Lodge Saltnerhütte in Tschapit
Die Saltnerhütte in Tschapit auf der Seiser Alm

What does “Saltner” mean? The name “Saltner” comes from the Latin word “saltus”…

…which can be translated as pasture. In the past, there was only cattle farming, but the Saltner entertained the farmers with wine and bacon. Over time, more and more hikers came in, which is how the tavern “Saltner” came into being.

Today, the Lodge Saltnerhütte mainly serves visitors but also includes a cattle farm. Our territory also encompasses a large public pasture (“ox forest”), where the farmers from the village take their animals in June. Our job is to monitor and look after these cattle. The animals may enjoy their “summer vacation” until September, when the farmers pick them up once again. Here, the lodge manager is also the shepherd.
